What is toxic positivity, you ask? There is no such thing? Um... there is, actually. Toxic positivity is like having a realllllyyy bad day and hearing someone say: "Cheer up, be grateful for your health." Well sure, I am very grateful to be healthy and alive today, however that does not change the fact that I am having a reallllly bad day. Like dropping ketchup on a white shirt bad. Like forgetting to mute your mic in a team meeting bad... Toxic positivity is brushing off the bad to acknowledge the good but not allowing yourself or someone else the chance to sit in those negative feelings. While there are always positive perspectives and things to be grateful for, it is still very necessary to be able to feel, process and validate your unhappiness for what it is. Not doing so could suppress and/or build up emotions, preventing necessary growth and healing. Being able to accept things as they show up for you in reality makes for a wiser perspective. Being able to accept the negative and move on, is what makes for a healthier lifestyle. How have you been hit with toxic positivity? How have you swerved it and protected your peace?
